Elsie Jay, while taking humanities, was kicked out and lodged in the principal’s office during the second week of her senior year . . . for not listening.
But Elsie Jay, who is deaf, was listening. Just not in the way most people listen.
While stuck in an office for three hours, in danger of not graduating, she and a companionable spider embark on a path lined with literacy artifacts. They are not only on a search for stories from prehistoric to modern times, but also a search for Elsie Jay’s place in her world.
Along the way, the spider learns what it means to live in a world designed for sound and language. Will the spider summon the principal and uncover Elsie Jay’s truth?
