Emergent Literacy

Emergent literacy is the prerequisite knowledge that occur prior to actual reading and writing. The early childhood years—the years before formal schooling begins at kindergarten or first grade—are optimal times to promote interest and enjoyment of books, expand vocabulary, foster storytelling skills, and develop phonological and alphabetic awareness. Since parents and other caregivers, and even early childhood centers and preschool programs, want to assure a healthy start in literacy, questions and concerns about children’s early literacy development can be addressed in a restorative approach.
